Balanced Attack Lifts Explorers Past A-10 Preseason Favorite Richmond, 84-78

RICHMOND, Va. – Six Explorers scored in double figures as the La Salle men's basketball team took down preseason Atlantic 10 Conference favorite Richmond on the road Saturday, 84-78. The Explorers shot 57.1 percent from the field led by sophomore Sherif Kenney, who finished with 17 points and four assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spiders jumped out to a 14-7 lead early on behind a Jacob Gilyard three-pointer, but the Explorers chipped away at the lead and stood within a point, 19-18, after a three by redshirt sophomore Jack Clark.
  • Richmond extended their advantage to 29-22 with 7:11 until halftime, yet the Explorers fought back again with five straight points from senior David Beatty and back-to-back fast break layups by freshman Jhamir Brickus to put the Explorers on top, 31-29.
  • After the Spiders regained the lead, freshman Anwar Gill drained a three to give La Salle a 34-32 advantage with 3:38 to go in the half, and another trifecta from Kenney made it a three-point lead just moments later.
  • A pair of free throws by redshirt junior Clifton Moore kept La Salle ahead by one in the final minute of the half until a Tyler Burton layup gave Richmond a 40-39 edge at halftime.
  • Junior Jared Kimbrough scored five straight points in the early going of the second half, putting the Explorers up 44-42 before the Spiders evened the score, however redshirt senior Scott Spencer knocked down a three to put La Salle back on top.
  • La Salle used a quick 6-0 run just a minute later to take a 53-46 lead, forcing Richmond to burn a timeout, and the difference remained seven after a Clark jumper made it 55-48 with 13:27 to go.
  • Richmond answered with six straight points of their own and went on an 11-2 run to jump in front before Spencer hit from beyond the arc to give La Salle a 60-59 edge with 6:07 on the clock.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth until Kimbrough found sophomore Christian Ray for a three-point play on an and-one layup, and Spencer followed that up with a triple to give the Explorers a 68-63 advantage with 3:26 left.
  • The Explorers pushed that lead to 77-68 with 1:18 to go, and although the Spiders wouldn't go down easy as they made it a four-point game with 17 seconds remaining, La Salle knocked down 11-of-14 free-throws over the final two minutes to seal the deal.
