Fourth Quarter Defensive Struggles Haunt Women’s Basketball at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – The La Salle women's basketball team (8-8, 4-5 A-10) gave up a season high 31 points in the final quarter, which sealed the victory for Rhode Island (6-5, 6-2 A-10), 75-60, on Friday evening.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rhody held the lead at the media stoppage with 4:34 remaining, 9-6, in the first stanza. La Salle jumped out in front to end the period up, 14-13, with an 8-4 push.
  • The Explorers extended its lead in the second period with a 15-10 margin, including an 8-0 run over the final 1:47 leading into the stoppage at 3:44 for a 29-23 advantage. The Blue & Gold enhanced its lead after it outscored URI 4-3 over the final 3:44 for a 33-26 difference at the half.
  • The Rams made it a one possession game with a 10-6 advantage up to the 4:05 mark in the third frame. La Salle led, 39-36. The Explorers held a slight one-point lead at the conclusion of the third, 45-44.
  • The home team dominated the final quarter with more than double the number of points than La Salle to take the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • A trio of double-digit Explorers were led by junior Kayla Spruill, who recorded 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. She added seven rebounds and a pair of assists to her totals.
  • Sophomore Claire Jacobs raked in 15 points on a 6-of-16 shooting effort.
  • Junior Molly Masciantonio had an even 10 points on a 4-of-7 night from the field.
  • Senior Haleigh Hill led the team with eight rebounds, all coming on the defensive end.
  • Collectively, the group shot 42.6%, 23.5% from deep, and 71.4% at the line.
  • URI had four players in doubles figures and outshot the Explorers in all facets.
  • The Rams also claimed the turnover battle and the rebounding margin.

La Salle takes a quick trip from Kingston, R.I. to Amherst, Mass. for a Sunday matinee against Massachusetts.
