Men's Basketball Suffers Setback at UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – The La Salle University men's basketball team dropped an Atlantic 10 Conference contest on the road at Massachusetts Saturday, 83-67, snapping its two-game league win streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Redshirt junior Clifton Moore scored the first three points for the Explorers for a 3-2 lead early on, but La Salle was held scoreless over the next four minutes and the Minutemen took advantage with a 10-2 run.
  • Three-pointers from redshirt sophomore Jack Clark and redshirt senior Scott Spencer brought the Explorers back within a possession, 14-11, however UMass stormed ahead from there behind a 17-2 run that made it 31-13 in favor of the home team.
  • A jumper by freshman Jhamir Brickus ended the streak with 5:36 until the break and fellow rookie Anwar Gill made it a 12-point game moments later. Yet again, the Minutemen went on another run to close out the half, scoring the final 12 points to head into the locker room up 45-21.
  • UMass maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half, and back-to-back layups by sophomore Christian Ray got La Salle within 15 with 7:40 remaining, but that was as close as the Explorers would get.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gill led La Salle with 14 points, five rebounds and two steals, while senior David Beatty contributed 11 points and a pair of steals.
  • Massachusetts had full control on the glass with a 43-33 rebounding advantage and shot 23 more free throws than the Explorers.
