Camaren Cox Scores Second Half Goal to Push Women’s Soccer Past George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The La Salle women's soccer team enjoyed its trip to the nation's capital on Sunday afternoon, using an early goal in the second half to help the Explorers defeat George Washington in a 1-0 Atlantic 10 matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers created the first scoring chance of the contest as Camaren Cox slipped Molly O'Brien in on goal before the forward's attempt was well collected by the Colonial keeper.
  • Michela Auguadro found herself called into action in the 24th minute as GW's Lauren Prentice found herself wide open on the six yard box. The Explorer shot stopper stood tall and forced a reflex save out of the attempt, keeping the Colonials off the scoreboard as the ball trailed out for a corner kick.
  • The Explorers pressured the GW goal in the final 10 minutes, forcing Abby Mansoor into multiple saves in short succession. Haley Gschrey ripped an effort just outside of the box that was parried by Mansoor into the path of Danielle Rooney, who put the ball in the back of the net and started to celebrate only to see the assistant referee with his flag raised for offside.
  • The hosts held a late flurry of shot attempts, a few narrowly missing their mark while Auguadro recorded three first half saves.
  • The Explorers found pay dirt on their first shot of the second half, coming in the 57th minute. Bella Gonsiewski drove down the right wing and fired a cross into the box, where Cox was onrushing towards. With the Colonial keeper coming out, Cox was first to the ball and the redshirt-junior slipped her shot past the defense and into the back of the net.
  • The 77th minute saw a golden opportunity for George Washington to find an equalizer. Kelly Amador settled a cross into the box and beat Auguadro, but the shot narrowly sneaked past the outside of the post as La Salle maintained its advantage.
  • The La Salle defense tightened up in the final 10 minutes, clearing any opportunity the Colonials had for a late breakthrough to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • George Washington held an 8-4 advantage in the shot count after 45 minutes. GW finished out shooting La Salle 13-7. The Colonials held just a 7-5 tally in shots on goal.
  • Cox's goal was the second of her campaign, joining Emily Banashefski as the only other player with multiple goals. Gonsiewski recorded her first point on the season with the assist.
  • Auguadro earned her third shutout of the season, moving to 3-2-1 on the year. The Explorers haven't conceded the last 222 minutes with her in net. Auguadro finished the afternoon with seven saves.
