Women's Soccer Upended in Narrow Loss to VCU

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to league-leading VCU on Sunday afternoon in a windy McCarthy Stadium

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers started off strong, forcing the first save of the game as Grace Young collected a shot from Giovanna Castorina.
  • With most of the action on the attacking half of La Salle, the Rams grabbed a rare early opportunity as Michela Auguadro palmed a low driven effort outside for a corner kick in the 28th minute.
  • Only moments later VCU capitalized on a dangerous counter attack played through the left side. Samantha Jerabek cut inside and fired into the far right corner from 20 yards out to open the scoring.
  • La Salle nearly equalized in the 35th minute as Alyssa Van Heurck was first to a free kick, hitting the right post with her effort before the danger was cleared. The Rams held a 1-0 advantage into the break.
  • Shots were difficult to find going into a strong wind in the second half, the Explorers creating threatening attacks before danger was cleared by the Ram defense. Van Heurck and Molly O'Brien both tested Young in the second half but the VCU shot stopper answered the call with two saves.
  • Not allowing a shot the final 15 minutes of play, the Rams were able to just edge the Explorers with a 1-0 score inside McCarthy Stadium.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • The Rams held a marginal 12-9 advantage in shots, tallying six of them on goal compared to three from the Explorers.
  • Van Heurck, O'Brien and Kelli McGroarty all registered two shots for the Explorers.
  • Auguadro recorded five saves in defeat.
  • The Explorers fall to 5-8-2 on the year, 3-4-1 in A-10 action.
