Men’s Soccer Falls Short at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Junior Nare scored the lone goal for the Explorers in La Salle men's soccer's loss on the road at Rhode Island Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Just over 15 minutes into play a long throw for Rhode Island set up its first scoring attempt. The attack collected the initial deflected shot and found the back of the net to lead the Explorers 1-0.
  • Two minutes later Nare took the ball up the wing, entangled with a defender and passed it off to Scott Beeks. Beeks pulled the ball out for the long-range shot and sent it just wide.
  • The Explorers defense came up big in the 35th minute after the Rams sent the ball into the box twice and were stopped by a ready La Salle defense. Rhode Island took a third attempt at the net and the ball found the hands of Foster to end the defensive effort.
  • A shot from the deep-left side into the right of the net in the 41st minute gave Rhode Island a two-point lead over the Explorers as the teams headed into the second half.
  • Nare answered the call for La Salle in the 66th minute defeating a defender to create space for the right-footed shot to cut the Rams lead in half and get the Explorers on the board, 2-1.
  • A free kick opportunity sent clear over the wall and into the top of the net in the 67th minute gave Rhode Island a two-point advantage over the Explorers once again, 3-1.
  • Sam Decenio tried to close the gap in the 70th minute booting a shot from the same location as Nare earlier, but the Rams' Stefan Schmidt was ready for the save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Rhode Island led the Explorers in shots 11-9.
  • Foster and Schmidt both made three saves apiece.
  • La Salle had three corner kick opportunities to Rhode Island's two.
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle travels to New York on Tuesday, Oct. 26 to take on Columbia for its second of three-straight road games to end the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
