Molly Masciantonio Comes Up Big, La Salle Falls to Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -  The La Salle women's basketball team trailed behind the Drexel Dragons until the fourth quarter, but the final push wasn't enough as the Explorers dropped the contest 71-65 on Wednesday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Drexel got off to an early 8-0 run ended with a jumper from Christina Kline. Drexel outshot La Salle from the field 60% to 22.2% and ended the first quarter with a 10-point lead, 18-10.  
  • Molly Masciantonio set the tone in the second quarter opening the scoring with a pull-up jumper in the paint just nine seconds into play. La salle found its momentum out-scoring Drexel 25-19 in the second frame with nine points from Masciantonio including a 3-pointer as the clock hit 0:00 to bring the Explorers within four points of the lead, 37-33.
  • La Salle opened the third frame the way it ended the second with an Amy Jacobs 3-pointer to come within a single point of the lead, 37-36. The Explorers and Dragons traded points throughout the remainder of the quarter with each team earning 15 a piece, keeping the Dragons in the lead, 52-48.
  • A 5-0 run to start the fourth gave La Salle its first lead of the game 52-51. A 3-pointer from Spruill at 8:32 gave the Explorers their largest lead of the game, 56-53. The Dragons regained the lead three times in the final frame ultimately taking the 71-65 victory. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Kayla Spruill and Jaye Haynes led the scoring effort for the Explorers. Spruill earned her third-straight double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Haynes added 12 points and five boards.
  • Masciantonio notched a season-high nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and 1-of-2 from deep. She added six assists, tying her season-high.
  • La Salle led the effort from beyond the arc shooting 11-of-34 (32.4%).
  • The Explorers won the turnover battle with a +6 margin (12-18) which led to 19 points.
  • Collectively, the team shot 36.9% from the field, 32.4% from deep and 60.0% from the line.
GAME NOTES:
  • Freshman Julie Jekot earned her first collegiate points shooting 1-of-3 from the field and 1-of-3 from beyond the arc.
  • Michelle Kozicki recorded her first 3-pointer of the season.
  • La Salle still leads the all-time series against Drexel, 20-12, but ends its single-game win streak against the Dragons.
  • Head coach Mountain MacGillivray is now 1-3 against Drexel.

  • The Explorers return home to Tom Gola Arena this Saturday, Nov. 20 to face off against Niagara on military appreciation day. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
