Defense Propels Explorers to 61-58 Victory Over Army West Point

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's basketball team grinded out a competitive win over a tough Army West Point team, defeating the Black Knights 61-58 inside Tom Gola Arena on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trading baskets early in the contest, neither team were able to create separation in the early stages of the contest.
  • La Salle crept out to as much as a five-point lead, holding 15-10 and 17-12 advantages.
  • A 6-0 Black Knight run gave the visitors their first lead of the contest at 18-17, extending the run to as much as 13-2 before Khalil Brantley ended the drought with a contested layup for his eight point of the game, a career-best.
  • The Explorers closed out the half on a 12-4 spurt, led by Brantley's six points in that stretch alongside treys from Josh Nickelberry and Sherif Kenney.
  • Taking a 31-29 lead into the half after Brantley's circus shot was disallowed, the Explorers fought off a 10-0 discrepancy in free throw attempts in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Starting the second half on an 11-5 run, the Explorers quickly stretched the lead to a 42-34 margin just moments out of the break.
  • Army West Point kept fighting, chipping at the lead slowly. The visitors erased their deficit to take a 56-54 lead after an and-one conversion.
  • After Anwar Gill dove on the floor to keep a possession alive, a Clifton Moore offensive rebound tipped into the open hands of Jhamir Brickus saw the sophomore tickle the twine from deep to regain the lead, one they wouldn't relinquish.
  • A few chances to tie or take the lead fell short for the Black Knights, Gill able to push the lead back to three points with six seconds remaining. The Explorer defense shut down Army, not allowing them to get a final shot off as the Explorers walked out of a battle in Tom Gola Arena in 61-58 fashion.

GAME NOTES
  • In 12 minutes of action, Brantley's 12 points nearly matched the 13 he totaled in his first three games. The freshman would stagnate at that number the rest of the game.
  • Clifton Moore proved to be a problem on defense, the redshirt senior blocking a career-best six shots against the Black Knights while securing seven rebounds. Moore's previous high in blocks came twice, tallying four against Lincoln (Pa.) and Duquesne in the 2020-21 season.
  • Jack Clark tallied a team-high nine rebounds, seven of them in the first half.
  • Brickus led all scorers with 14 points, going 5-8 from the field with a 3-5 (60%) tally from behind the arc. Christian Ray also joined Brantley and Brickus in double-figures with 10 points and eight rebounds, collecting double-digits for the third straight game.
  • La Salle now moves to 2-0 on the season when the game ends in regulation, 0-2 when the contest goes into overtime.
  • The 61 points is the lowest the Explorers scored in a win since a Dec. 12 contest against Drexel last season, defeating the Dragons 61-58.
  • La Salle held the Black Knights to 58 points on 31.1% shooting, a season-low for an opponent in both categories. Army West Point came into the contest averaging 74.8 points per game and 47.5% from the field.
  • La Salle led for 30:02 of the game, trailing for just 6:58 on the night.
  • The Explorers shot 39.3% from the field, the lowest percentage in a win since a 58-49 victory over Fordham on February 19, 2020.
