La Salle Falls to No. 20 Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The La Salle women's basketball team held the scoring advantage in the third and fourth quarters, but an early lead from Kentucky paired with a low-scoring fourth quarter for the Explorers was too much to overcome. The Wildcats walked away with the 74-52 victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle opened the first frame strong with a Kayla Spruill 3-pointer off the helping hand of Claire Jacobs just 15 seconds into play. The Explorers maintained its 3-point lead off a jumper from Jaye Haynes at the 8:14 mark, but a 12-2 run through the following six minutes put the Wildcats ahead by nine, 16-7. Kentucky ended the frame with a 13-point advantage on the Explorers, 27-14.
  • La Salle trailed by as many as 18 in the second frame but a 10-4 run through the final five minutes helped bring the Explorers back within eight points of the lead. The Explorers held the 14-12 advantage in the quarter shooting 50.0% from the field and the long range.
  • A 5-of-6 effort from the line helped the Explorers to a 19-17 advantage over Kentucky in the third frame to come back within nine points of the lead, 56-47.
  • The Wildcats broke a scoreless three minutes to start the fourth but La Salle answered the call when a loose ball controlled by Claire Jacobs found the hands of sister Amy Jacobs for the layup for two. Kentucky ran away with the lead holding a 18-5 advantage over the Explorers in the quarter.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Amy Jacobs led the scoring effort for La Salle with 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting and 2-of-7 from deep.
  • Haynes added nine points while Spruill and Jordon Lewis added seven apiece.
  • Kenya Côté-Lysius had a team-high four assists.
  • The rebound effort was tied with both teams pulling down a total of 40 boards. The Explorers held the advantage in offensive rebounds, 16-11.
  • The Wildcats beat the Explorers in the 3-point game shooting 42.1% (8-of-19) from deep compared to La Salle who shot 27.3% (6-of-22).
  • Overall, the Explorers shot 29.2% from the field, 27.3% from the long range and 80.0% from the line.
GAME NOTES:
  • The Explorers are now 0-1 in the all-time series against Kentucky. The Wildcats are the first nationally ranked team La Salle has faced this season.Amy Jacobs has recorded her second-straight double-digit scoring effort. She tied her season-high field goals made (4) and set a new season-high in field goals attempted (13).
  • Côté -Lysius has led the Explorers in assists in two-straight games.
  • Michelle Kozicki's seven boards marks a new career-high. 
  • The 22-point loss marks the largest margin of defeat for the Explorers this season.
