Men's Basketball Suffers Setback at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's basketball team suffered defeat on Wednesday evening, falling to Big Five foes Temple in 73-57 fashion inside the Liacouras Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A Clifton Moore free throw and an early basket from Sherif Kenney looked as if the Explorers were poised to get off to a quicker start than in their last matchup with Villanova. But the Owls would counter, knocking down seven straight points into the first media timeout to take an early 9-3 lead.
  • After a couple of quick baskets by Jack Clark and Kenney, the Explorers once again saw their offense sputter. A 4:13 scoring drought from La Salle allowed the Owls to go on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 23-9 at the under eight media.
  • A thundering slam from Moore broke the 11-0 drought, hitting two free throws the next trip down to cut the lead to 11.
  • 20 fouls were called before the six minute mark of the first half from both teams combined, each in the double bonus after 14 minutes.
  • The hosts were able to extend their lead to 17 at the break, heading into the locker room with a 39-22 edge over the Explorers.
  • An 8-2 run to open the half and a 7-2 run from Temple helped increase their advantage, leading 52-31 into the under 12 media.
  • The Owls walked out with a 73-57 victory as the Explorers fall to 2-4 on the year, 0-2 in Big Five matchups.
 
GAME NOTES
  • For the second-straight game, the Explorers posted under 20% from the field in the opening half, fighting off a 6-33 effort in the opening 20 minutes. La Salle was held off of the three point line, going 0-10 from behind the arc in the first half. The Owls shot well above their average before the break, 10% above their average at a 14-27 (51.9%) clip.
  • La Salle finished 17-68 (25.0%) from the field and 6-28 (21.4%) from range. The Owls were 28-59 (47.5%) from the field, slightly edged by the Explorers on the glass 47-45.
  • Kenney led all Explorers with a game-high 23 points, knocking down eight of his 15 attempts.
  • Christian Ray finished with 12 rebounds on the evening, nine of them coming on the offensive side of the ball.
  • Matt McFarlane made his debut for the Explorers, knocking down a three just moments after check in for his first points in Blue and Gold.
  • Andrew Lafond made his season debut in the closing stages, recording a steal.
