QUEENS, N.Y. – The La Salle women's basketball team travels to St. John's this Saturday, Dec. 11 for its fourth road game in two weeks. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle (6-3) hits the road once again for a Saturday-afternoon matchup in New York against St. John's (4-4). The Explorers enter the contest following a midweek victory at home against UMES on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
- The Explorers led by as many as 19 in the second quarter following an early lead from a 14-0 spurt in the five minutes of the game. UMES held the 19-12 edge over La Salle in the second quarter to cut the deficit to just five points at the end of the half, 35-30. The Red Flash tied it up in the third frame, but the Explorers held a two-point edge over UMES in the final 10 minutes to take the 77-70 victory.
- La Salle has won five of its last six contests including three straight. The Explorers are currently 2-2 when playing on the road having won their last two road contests.
- Kayla Spruill's 4-for-4 effort from the charity stipe in the game marks her third-straight game shooting 100% from the line. She currently ranks third in the nation and first in the Atlantic 10 in free throw percentage shooting 97.2%. Her 23 points mark her second 20-plus point effort this season. She leads the team's offense averaging 16.2 points per game. The senior has reached double-digits in every game but one this season.
- Molly Masciantonio continues to lead the defensive charge for the Explorers recording seven steals in the contest against UMES. She also recorded a season-high 11 points, marking her first double-digit scoring effort of the season.
- Jaye Haynes is the only other Explorer averaging double-digits this season recording 10.4 points per game.
- La Salle continues to win the turnover battle committing just 16.0 per game and forcing an average of 20.4 per game from its opponents.
- As a group, La Salle is shooting 35.2% from the field, 30.4% from the long range and 80.7% from the line.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM:
- St. John's enters the contest following its first conference victory against Seton Hall, 88-75, on Sunday, Dec. 5. The Red Storm is currently 4-0 when playing at home in Carnesecca Arena.
- Leilani Correa paced St. John's in the game with 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 40 minutes of action. She currently ranks third in the Big East with 18.9 points per game. Correa has finished each game in double-digits this season and has reached the 20-point plateau on three occasions.
- Kadaja Bailey, who earned a spot on the Big East honor roll for the second time this season, added 23 points in the game. Bailey currently averages 14.6 points per game and has been a force from the 3-point range converting 50.0% of her shots, sitting second on the Big East's leaderboard.
- Both Danielle Patterson and Danielle Cosgrove finished in double figures in the Red Storm's last contest. Patterson recorded 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds in the contest while Cosgrove netted 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor.
SERIES HISTORY:
- This will be the third meeting between the two teams and the first since the 2018-19 season.
- The Explorers have only visited St. John's once before recording their first loss of the series.
- The Red Storm last visited La Salle on Dec. 15, 2018 and recorded its second-straight win in the series, 83-57, marking La Salle's largest margin of defeat.
