Men's Soccer | February 19, 2021

PHILADELPHIA – After winning its season opener last weekend, the La Salle men's soccer team will look for its second consecutive road victory when the Explorers travel to Seton Hall on Saturday for a 3 p.m. non-conference tilt with the Pirates.

STARTING ON THE RIGHT FOOT
  • The Explorers kicked off the season with a statement victory, knocking off Philadelphia Soccer Six rival and Big East member Villanova on the road, 2-1.
  • La Salle trailed by a goal with less than 13 minutes left but rallied for two late goals to pull off the come-from-behind victory.
  • Junior Charlie Collins found fellow classmate Sam DeCencio in the 78th minutes to tie the game at one all on his fourth career goal.
  • Collins then dropped in another beautiful pass to junior Omari Cotterell in the 88th minute for the go-ahead tally, which proved to be the game-winner.
  • It was La Salle's first win over Villanova in 20 years and marked the third consecutive season in which the Explorers won their season opener.
COTTERELL, WERNER HONORED BY ATLANTIC 10
  • Both Cotterell and junior goalkeeper Brett Werner were recognized with the season's first Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week awards on Tuesday.
  • Cotterell was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career after recording the game-winner at Villanova. The 6-foot-1 forward also tallied a game-high five shots over the full 90 minutes, including three on goal.
  • Werner was tabbed as A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, his third career weekly honor from the league. The 6-foot-5 keeper made four saves and held Villanova scoreless in the second half to pick up the sixth win of his career in net.
SCOUTING SETON HALL
  • Seton Hall, another member of the Big East Conference, ended its season opener at NJIT in a 3-3 draw on Wednesday.
  • Johannes Pex scored two first-half goals to give the Pirates a 2-1 halftime lead before the Highlanders answered with a pair to jump in front late in the second.
  • CJ Tibbling scored the game-tying goal in the 80th minute to force extra time and that's where the scoring stopped.
  • The Pirates went 6-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Big East last season, while going 4-3-1 at home.
