PHILADELPHIA – Senior
David Beatty netted a career-high 22 points off the bench to pace five double-digit scorers as the La Salle men's basketball team knocked off the Saint Louis Billikens Wednesday night, 82-75, in Atlantic 10 action from Tom Gola Arena.
Sophomore
Sherif Kenney made a career-best 13 foul shots on his way to a 17-point night, while redshirt sophomore
Jack Clark contributed 15 points and nine rebounds for the Explorers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Redshirt junior Clifton Moore gave the Explorers a 6-4 lead on a jumper just under four minutes into the game and Kenney later nailed a jumper of his own to even the score at nine apiece.
- Saint Louis scored the next eight points, however, to take a 17-9 advantage after three straight buckets from Demarius Jacobs.
- The Explorers answered with a quick 6-0 run to pull within a deuce on a layup by junior Jared Kimbrough, but the Billikens stretched it back to a 22-15 difference.
- La Salle kept chipping away and knotted the score at 26 all with 5:46 until halftime before Saint Louis went back on top by four, but a Clark three-pointer sparked an 8-0 run for the Explorers to end the half, providing a 36-32 halftime lead.
- Kenney extended the advantage to seven with an old-fashioned three-point play just 10 seconds into the second half and the Explorers remained on top at 48-42 after Kenney found Clark for a trifecta.
- The Billikens responded though, going on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to jump in front by a point, 49-48.
- That's when Beatty started to find his groove as the senior guard scored the next 11 points for the Explorers, including two key threes that put La Salle back on top 59-54 with 6:47 to play.
- Moore hit from beyond the arc during the Explorers' next possession and a steal by freshman Anwar Gill led to a breakaway bucket for Beatty as the Explorers used an 11-1 run to go up by nine, 64-55.
- The Explorers then hit eight straight foul shots, with Kenney making six in a row and then Kimbrough making a pair before converting a layup to make it 74-62 with 2:15 on the clock.
- Saint Louis clawed its way back to make it a five-point game with 25 seconds left, but Beatty came through again, finding Kimbrough behind the press for a slam and then knocking down two free-throws to seal the victory in the closing seconds.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Beatty scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half and matched his career high with four three-pointers on five attempts while adding five rebounds.
- Kenney went 13-for-15 from the foul line for the game and scored 11 of his 13 second-half points at the charity stripe, while Clark went 6-for-8 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.
- Moore tallied 11 points, six rebounds and three blocks and Kimbrough was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field as the fifth Explorer to score in double digits with 10.
- La Salle held Saint Louis to a season-low 40.3 field goal percentage, well below its season average of 51.1 percent, and limited the Billikens to just 4-of-19 shooting from three. On the other hand, the Explorers shot 49.1 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from downtown.
UP NEXT
- The Explorers will visit Fordham on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. contest that will air on NBC Sports Network. La Salle rolled past the Rams last month at Tom Gola Arena, 89-52.
