Women’s Basketball Advances to Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals with OT Win Over Duquesne, 72-68

RICHMOND, Va. – The La Salle women's basketball team (12-13) is headed to the Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals after a 72-68 overtime victory against #9 Duquesne (5-11) in the second round on Thursday. This is the Explorers' first postseason victory since the 2016-17 season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Duquesne took an early 11-2 lead before La Salle scored the next four points for an 11-6 deficit at the media stoppage with 4:36 remaining. The Blue & Gold held the advantage over the remainder of the frame with a 6-4 differential to cut the deficit to 15-12.
  • The Explorers claimed three of the first five points of the second stanza when Duquesne took a timeout with 7:26 remaining for a 17-15 lead. La Salle continued to control the pace of play with a 15-7 advantage through the final minutes of the period for a 30-24 lead at the half.
  • La Salle opened the lead up to 10 points early in the third frame, however Duquesne was able to chip away at the differential for a 36-32 margin at the media timeout with 4:42 left. The Blue & Gold pushed ahead by as many as seven points before the final buzzer of the third sounded with a 44-40 lead.
  • Both squads tallied nine points each through the first 5:03 of the final period. Duquesne pulled ahead by one with 1:45 remaining in regulation. Two more lead changes happened before La Salle had a chance to snag a last second shot to claim the victory, but just missed, which forced an extra period.
  • The Blue & Gold took the lead with 3:09 on a bucket by sophomore Claire Jacobs. On the following possession, the Dukes knotted the game at 62, however La Salle scored 10 of the next 16 points to seal the win.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • C. Jacobs finished with 27 points and tied a career high with nine rebounds. She shot 10-of-28 overall, 3-of-8 from deep, and 4-of-7 from the stripe.
  • Junior Kayla Spruill tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Spruill shot 50% from the floor (5-of-10).
  • Senior Haleigh Hill completed the trio of double-digit scorers with a career high 14 points. The Allen, Texas native corralled nine rebounds to near a double-double.
  • La Salle outshot the Dukes in all facets – 34.8% to 34.2% overall, 23.1% to 21.9% from deep, and 72.0% to 69.2% from the line.
GAME NOTES:
  • The victory marks the first postseason win under head coach Mountain MacGillivray.
  • La Salle moves to 9-2 when leading at the half.

The Explorers will return to play #1 Dayton at 11 a.m. on Friday in the Atlantic 10 Championship Quarterfinals.
