Softball Downed at Towson to Conclude Opening Weekend

TOWSON, Md. – The La Salle softball team (0-3) lost in six innings at Towson (7-3), 12-4, on Sunday to finish its opening weekend.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The home squad jumped out in front after the first frame with one run.
  • La Salle responded in the top of the second as junior Kaylee Piven drove in sophomore Victoria Zatko on a fielder's choice. During the next at-bat, the Towson catcher errored, which allowed senior Ashley Mendenhall to score from third.
  • In the bottom half, Towson sent a double to right field to go up 3-2.
  • Two innings later, the Tigers tallied five runs on four hits and two errors to remain ahead, 8-2.
  • Piven tripled in the visiting half of the sixth to drive in Mendenhall for her second run of the day. Three batters later, sophomore Lauren Begg reached on an infield single, which brought Piven home for an 8-4 deficit.
  • Towson tabbed four runs in the home half of the sixth with four hits to enforce the run rule.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Piven highlighted the La Salle scorecard with a pair of RBIs, a run scored, and a triple.
  • Rookie Alyssa Fagans registered her first career hit in a 2-for-3 performance.
  • Mendenhall was 1-for-3 and scored twice.
  • Five other Explorers recorded a base knock.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Junior Sarah Dowalo (0-2) registered the loss with just one earned run over four innings of work on nine hits surrendered. She notched one strikeout on the afternoon.
  • Sophomore Regan Ware entered in relief for 1.2 innings. She gave up three earned runs on five hits. Ware also struck out one batter faced.
UP NEXT:
La Salle will entertain Saint Joseph's on Saturday and Sunday for four games to begin Atlantic 10 play.
