PHILADELPHIA - Freshman
Tatum Johnson scored the first goal of her collegiate career and added an assist as the La Salle field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2, overtime loss to UMass at Hank DeVincent Field on Saturday.
The Explorers built a 2-1 lead heading into halftime, but the Minutewomen scored once early in the fourth quarter to tie the game and registered the game-winning tally less than a minute into overtime.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first quarter, UMass opened the scoring in the 20th minute as Claire Danahy found the back of the cage off a feed from Georgie McTear.
- The lead was shortlived, however, as the Explorers came right back less than a minute later to knot the contest at 1-1.
- Johnson poked home a chance from the left side to even the score, then assisted on the go-ahead goal in the 22nd minute.
- Sophomore Samie Hackman finished on an opportunity in front after a green card on UMass gave the Explorers an advantage, as the Explorers took a lead.
- La Salle remained in front into the fourth quarter, in part due to the stellar play of senior goalkeeper Cassie Kincaid.
- Kincaid made 10 saves on the afternoon, including a number of point-blank chances for the Minutewomen.
- At the 46:13 mark of the fourth, McTear, a First Team All-Atlantic 10 selection last year and an All-A-10 player the past three seasons, tied the game again at 2-2 off a penalty corner.
- The two teams battled to a draw through 60 minutes, before McTear scored her second goal of the game off a corner to give UMass the win.
