AMHERST, Mass. – The La Salle softball team (0-19, 0-12 A-10) battled in a pair of games Sunday afternoon, but fell to Massachusetts (11-10, 8-6 A-10) 7-1 and 5-4.
UMASS 7, LA SALLE 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Massachusetts jumped out to a 5-0 lead with one in the first and four in the third before La Salle tallied a run.
- In the top of the fourth, junior Kaylee Piven sent a home run to center field to put the Blue & Gold on the board.
- UMass added two in the bottom of the fourth for a 7-1 advantage that would become final.

- Junior Sarah Dowalo (0-11) picked up the loss on just two earned runs over 10 hits and a walk in six innings of work. She punched out three batters in the game.
UMASS 5, LA SALLE 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Minutewomen struck first with a run in the second inning on a triple and an error.
- La Salle jumped in front with a four-run fifth inning. Piven scored on a wild pitch, followed by a homer off the bat of junior Natalie Rios for a 2-1 lead. Three batters later, Dodson sent a two-run double to left center field to push the gap to 4-1.
- UMass knotted the game in the home half of the fifth with three runs on two hits and two errors.
- A triple and a single in the sixth led to the eventual game-winning run for the Minutewomen.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- The Explorers recorded nine hits in the ball game, with eight different student-athletes in that column.
- Rios launched her first dinger of the campaign in a 1-for-3 outing.
- Dodson was the only Explorer with a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3 with the double and two RBIs.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Regan Ware (0-8) allowed just two earned runs on eight hits and two walks in five innings of work.
- Dowalo entered for a perfect sixth inning.
