Explorers Complete Season Sweep of Hawks with 2-0 Shutout

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University men's soccer team scored two late goals to secure a 2-0 shutout win over rival Saint Joseph's on the road to complete the season sweep of the Hawks. Junior Nigel Buckley and freshman Scott Beeks recorded the La Salle goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a defensive battle in the first half as the two teams combined for just five shots in the opening period, leading to a scoreless tie at halftime.
  • La Salle finally ended the scoring drought in the 75th minute when junior Charlie Collins sent a deep pass into the box, where classmate Nigel Buckley headed in his second goal of the season to put the Explorers up 1-0.
  • Freshman Scott Beeks then iced the game with a deep strike from outside the box that deflected off a defender and past the Hawks' goalkeeper to make it a two-goal difference with just 110 seconds remaining.
  • The Explorers dominated the Hawks defensively as freshman goalkeeper Cam Hall only needed to make one save to pick up his first career win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • La Salle held Saint Joseph's to just one shot on goal for the game and held a 10-6 shot advantage with a 6-1 edge in shots on target.
  • Over their two games this season, La Salle held Saint Joseph's scoreless and outscored the Hawks 4-0.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers (5-4-1, 2-2-1) will now play a must-win game against Massachusetts at McCarthy Stadium on Saturday at 7 p.m. as they battle for one of four spots in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
