La Salle Athletics Sets New Record for Atlantic 10 Commissioner's Honor Roll Members

A10 CHR 21

General | June 28, 2021

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The La Salle University Athletic Department set a new school record for Atlantic 10 Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll members, the league revealed on Monday. The Explorers had a total of 272 student-athletes on the list for the 2020-21 academic year, breaking last year's previous record of 263.

Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a 3.0 GPA for the academic year to be selected for the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

"Another record-setting number of student-athletes achieved the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll, which is even more impressive due to an atypical learning environment caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic," stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "It's extraordinary that almost 10 percent of our honorees had perfect 4.0 GPAs and almost 70 percent were at 3.5 GPAs or better.  I commend & congratulate our student-athletes for their hard work and our member institutions for their commitment to the academic success of all students."

Among La Salle's program's, women's lacrosse had the most honorees with 28 in total. Women's soccer was next with 26, followed by men's soccer with 25. Men's and women's track & field, baseball, field hockey and women's swimming and diving all had 20 or more as well.

Of the Atlantic 10-sponsored programs, 172 Explorers posted a 3.5 GPA or higher. Eighteen of those programs boasted team GPAs of 3.0 or higher during the spring semester. La Salle student-athletes as a whole posted a combined GPA of 3.31 this past spring.

It was a record for the Atlantic 10 as a conference as well with 3,845 student-athletes being named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. The recognition was previously awarded twice during the academic year, once after each semester. The change to once per year was made prior to the 2017-18 season.
