PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle field hockey team (3-2) continued their dominance at home on Friday afternoon, rallying from a goal down against Lehigh (2-2) to win 4-3 and improve to 3-0 at Hank DeVincent Field in the fall 2021 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Lehigh got off to a strong start on Friday, as Drew Pecora broke the ice just 6:10 into the match on a feed from Oliva Perrone to give the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
- In the second quarter, the Explorer offense responded by striking twice in just in under three minutes to give La Salle a 2-1 lead.
- Freshman Cristina Dougherty tallied her second goal of the season by deflecting fellow freshman Sofia Pla's shot into the net on a corner to tie the game at 1-1 at the 24:50 mark.
- Just 2:50 later, graduate senior Jessica Hewitt notched her first goal of the campaign on a sweet feed from junior Casey Reilly in front of the cage, slamming it home to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead that would hold until halftime.
- Lehigh found the equalizer early in the third quarter, as Pecora played a feed inside the circle to Sarah Bonthuis who smacked a one-time shot into the top of the cage to level the game at 2-2 at the 32:31 mark.
- The Explorers wasted no time regaining the lead, as sophomore Tatum Johnson collected her own rebound and scored just 50 seconds later to put La Salle up 3-2.
- Freshman Sophia Wasyliw added her first goal of the season later in the third, firing a shot through traffic and into the net at the 39:36 mark to take a 3-2 lead.
- Lehigh attempted to mount a late comeback, as Pecora scored her second goal of the game with 3:23 to play, smacking home a rebound after La Salle keeper Ryan Curley stopped the initial corner shot to make it 4-3.
- The Mountain Hawks got one more corner with just under three minutes to play, but the La Salle defense managed a clear to secure a 4-3 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Shots were nearly even in Friday's back-and-forth affair, with Lehigh holding a slight edge, 15-14, as shots on goal were even at 9-9.
- La Salle attempted five penalty corners to Lehigh's four.
- Freshman Quinn Medico made her first career start on Friday after scoring her first career goal against Drexel on Sept. 5.
- With Hewitt and Wasyliw's goals, La Salle has now had eight different goal scorers and 12 different players record points for their balanced offense.
- Pla tallied her first assist of the season, giving her a team-best 11 points.
- Johnson's goal was her fourth of the campaign, giving her 10 points through five games.
- Ryan Curley (3-2) made six saves to pick up her third win of the season.
