Big Second Half Leads Villanova Past La Salle

CONSHOHOCKEN - Villanova used a big second half to down La Salle field hockey, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Proving Grounds. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Tatum Johnson got the Explorers off to a strong start on Sunday, scoring 4:34 into the game to give La Salle an early 1-0 lead. 
  • Villanova responded with two quick goals by Amanda Middleman and Caitlin Van Goeverden to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. 
  • The Explorers bounced back with a pair of goals in the second by Hannah Yanovich and Casey Reilly to surge back in front, 3-2 at the 24:20 mark. 
  • Sabine de Ruijter found the equalizer for the Wildcats, knotting the game at 3-3 just before the half. 
  • Villanova's offense got hot in the second half, as de Ruijter tallied her second goal of the game at the 36:54 mark to put Villanova back in front. 
  • The Wildcats added goals in the fourth quarter by de Ruijter, who completed her hat trick, and Meghan Mitchell to secure a 6-3 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Villanova led the game in shots 16-9, including 10-7 in shots on goal. 
  • Penalty corners were nearly even, with the Wildcats holding a narrow 9-8 edge. 
  • Goalkeeper Emily Streib made her La Salle debut with 7:20 shutout minutes.
UP NEXT:
The Explorers will begin Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday, Sept. 24 when they head to Richmond.
