Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker in OT to Columbia

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Emily Banashefski scored her second goal of the season less than 10 seconds into the non-conference match against Columbia on Wednesday evening. The Lions, however, battled back to tie the game with less than 10 minutes to go in regulation and found the game-winner in the second overtime period to hand the Explorers a tough 2-1 defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Directly after the opening kickoff, a miscue by the Columbia defense created a prime opportunity for the Explorers seconds in.
  • Banashefski was the beneficiary, depositing her shot past Paige Nurkin to give the home team a quick 1-0 lead.
  • The score remained the same through the first 45 minutes of action, as La Salle goalkeeper Jordynn Stallard made five saves in the opening half.
  • In the second half, the two teams each had chances but the Explorers remained in front until the later portion of the period.
  • Sophia Cavaliere headed home a cross from Sam Cohn to knot the score at 1-1 in the 83rd minute.
  • Following a scoreless first overtime period, the Lions clinched the win as Madi Pilla left-footed a shot to the lower-right corner of goal with just about six minutes left in extra time.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • The two teams combined for 36 shots in a high-paced offensive affair. The Lions held a 20-16 advantage.
  • Stallard closed with 10 saves for the match, which marked a career high to eclipse her prior high of seven set this season at Drexel.
  • Sophomore Kelli McGroarty led the Explorers with five shots, including three on frame. Pilla paced Columbia with seven attempts.
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle will have a week off before its next contest at Saint Francis U. in Loretto, Pa., on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
