PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's basketball team faced a close battle inside Tom Gola Arena Wednesday night, falling to Atlantic 10 foe Dayton, 65-57.
The Explorers are now 8-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play while Dayton improves to 11-3 overall and 2-0 in the A-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle took its only lead, 5-2, at the 7:54 mark in the first quarter with a Jaye Haynes step-back jump shot. Dayton was quick to take the lead with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes and sealed the deal by putting together an 8-2 run through the final three minutes of play to pull ahead by five at the end of the first frame, 17-12.
- The Explorers came within one point of Dayton's lead with 2:36 left in the second quarter after Amy Jacobs capitalized with a three-point bucket from a turnover. But, once again Dayton finished the frame with an 8-0 run to pull ahead by nine points at the end of the half, 31-22.
- Claire Jacobs' 4-for-4 effort from the line paired with Molly Masciantonio's and-one play brought the Explorers within one point of the lead with just under three minutes left to in the third quarter, 41-40. A three-point bucket by Dayton paired with two shots from the line allowed the Flyers to regain a six-point advantage. But, the Jacobs sisters were there to answer the call earning back-to-back layups to bring La Salle back within two points with just over a minute to go in play. Dayton put together a four-point effort through the final minute to regain a six-point lead heading into the final frame, 50-44.
- The Flyers grabbed as much as a 10-point lead with just over two minutes to go in the final frame. The Explorers came within four-points twice in the first three minutes of the quarter, but five points from the line for Dayton in the final 44 seconds of play put the game just out of reach.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Amy Jacobs was the only Explorer to score in double digits earning 10 points in the game.
- Gabby Crawford came up just shy of double-digit rebounding, pulling down a total of nine boards.
- La Salle won the turnover battle, 18-16, and led Dayton in second chance points, 20-12, as well as points from the bench, 20-4.
- The Explorers struggled from the field earning just 20 points in the paint to the Flyers' 42. La Salle shot 29.2% overall and 20.7% from the long range while Dayton recorded 50.0% shooting from the field and 33.3% from deep.
- The difference was in La Salle's favor at the charity stripe. The Explorers went 13-for-15 (86.7%) from the line while Dayton shot just 48.0% (12-for-25).
GAME NOTES:
- This marks just the third game this season where an opponent has out-shot the Explorers from the three-point range.
- La Salle has won the turnover battle in nine of its 14 contests this season.
- This is the second consecutive double-digit game for Amy Jacobs and her fourth total this season. Her 37 minutes played marks a new season-high for the junior.
- Crawford's nine rebounds mark a new season-high for the junior.
- Claire Jacobs went a perfect 6-for-6 from the line marking a new season-high in both free throws made and attempted.
- Molly Masciantonio played a season-high 38 minutes and pulled down a season-high seven boards.
