PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's basketball team suffered defeat on Saturday afternoon, unable to muster a late Richmond run to fall to the Spiders 64-56 inside of Tom Gola Arena in TruMark Financial Center.
La Salle (6-10, 1-5 A-10) suffered its second-straight defeat in its third game in six days, Richmond moving to a .500 record in conference play (12-7, 3-3 A-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams traded baskets on the first six possessions, La Salle holding a one-point margin at 7-6.
- After the Spiders rattled off the next four points, the Explorers took over. Jack Clark led the Explorers with back-to-back slams, knocking down eight points in part of a 15-4 La Salle run to give the home side a 22-14 lead. The Spiders were held to 1-8 shooting in that run.
- Richmond countered the run with one of its own, soon tying the game back up at 25 apiece.
- The Spiders scored six of the final 10 points of the half, taking a 31-29 lead into the locker room.
- After the Explorers quickly tied it at 33 on the other side of the break, Richmond sparked a 9-0 run to regain the lead.
- Jhamir Brickus countered with a 5-0 run for the Explorers, draining a three before finding Clifton Moore for an easy dunk.
- Another Richmond run put the visitors up by double figures, giving the Explorers work to do to get back into the contest.
- The Explorers were able to trim the deficit to as little as seven, but La Salle turnovers and a strong finish at the line saw the Spiders walk out of Tom Gola Arena with a 64-56 win.
GAME NOTES
- Moore had a game-high 19 points on 9-12 (75%) from the field, tallying double-digit scoring for the sixth straight game. The redshirt senior also pulled in 12 rebounds, tying a career-high. He tallied fourth career double-double, all coming in the last five games.
- Clark heated up in the first half, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the first 20 minutes. Clark also grabbed eight rebounds and tied a season-best with three assists.
- All nine of Josh Nickelberry's points came in the final 8:21 of the game, the junior adding a career-high three assists while chipping in five rebounds.
- Christian Ray added eight rebounds, four of them on the offensive glass. He was one of four Explorers that registered three assists.
- Richmond's Nathan Cayo and Grant Golden both scored 18 points, combining for 18-26 from the field. Tyler Burton added 12 points, while Jacob Gilyard registered seven assists while playing all 40 minutes.
- The Explorers shot 21-55 (38.2%) from the field, 3-15 (20.0%) from deep. Richmond finished 24-53 (45.3%) on the night, 3-19 (15.8%) from beyond the arc. La Salle outrebounded the Spiders 40-28 in the loss.
