Explorers Fall in Tough Battle at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -  The La Salle women's basketball team gave up an early lead to Duquesne that it could not overcome falling to the Dukes 67-48 on Sunday afternoon.

La Salle is now 11-8 on the season and 4-3 in Atlantic 10 play while Duquesne improves to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Duquesne jumped out to an early four-point lead over La Salle. A 7-0 run for the Explorers comprised of an Amy Jacobs three and back-to-back Gabby Crawford jumpers tied it up at 10-10 at the 5:33 mark. The Dukes' took a three-point lead into the media eventually extending it to a four-point advantage over the Explorers to end the first quarter, 20-16.
  • Duquesne broke the scoring drought in the second quarter with a three-point bucket at the 7:34 mark. The Dukes' took a slight 5-2 advantage over the Explorers into the media timeout. Duquesne pulled ahead by as many as 13 in the frame with a 10-4 edge over La Salle through the 0:22 mark. Kayla Spruill sank a last second three to cut the deficit to 10 heading into the second half, 35-10.
  • La Salle trailed 12-6 heading into the media paired with a 7-1 run from Duquesne coming out of the break through the remainder of the frame with the Explorers earning their lone point from a 1-of-2 effort at the line by Crawford.
  • The Explorers came out strong to start the fourth putting together a 12-3 effort to cut the deficit to just 12 heading into the media. The Dukes' answered back in the final four minutes of play taking the 11-4 edge to claim victory, 67-48.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Crawford led the Explorers putting up 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting including 1-of-1 from deep and 2-of-4 from the field. She was the only Explorer to reach double-digits in the game.
  • Molly Masciantonio led in assists with four.
  • Spruill pulled down a team-high eight boards.
  • The Dukes' outshot the Explorers from the floor (41.9%-36.4%), the long range (32.3%-17.9%) and from the charity stripe (100.0%-50.0%).
  • La Salle lost the turnover battle 18-14 but won the battle at the boards 33-38.
  • The Explorers held the advantage in points off turnovers (15-13), second chance points (8-7) and points off the bench (23-12). Duquesne had the edge over points in the paint (26-14) and fast break points (18-0).
GAME NOTES:
  • Gabby Crawford has now reached double-digits in six games this season. This marks her first 20+ effort of the year.
  • This is just the fourth game this season where only one Explorer has scored double figures.
  • This is the first game this season that La Salle has scored under 50 points and the second consecutive game in which the Explorers have shot a season-low 17.9% from the 3-point range, marking just the fifth time this season the Explorers opponent has out-shot them from the long range.
  • The 22-point deficit in the fourth quarter is just a single-point shy of the Explorers largest deficit this season, 23 points at Kentucky.
  • La Salle did record the best scoring run of the game at one point going on an 11-0 streak while the Dukes put together at most a 7-0 run.
  • This is the seventh game this season that La Salle has won the rebounding battle. The Explorers are now 5-2 when outrebounding their opponent.
