FARMVILLE, Va. – The La Salle field hockey team gave up two early goals in the first quarter, but responded with five-straight through the remaining 45 minutes of play to surge past Longwood 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.
La Salle improves to 6-8 on the season while the Lancers fall to 3-9. This marks the highest-scoring game for the Explorers this season and sets its longest-winning streak at three. This is the first time under the tenure of head coach
Martu Loncarica that the Explorers have recorded five-straight goals and just the second time they have recorded a five-goal game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first quarter belonged to Longwood taking a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes.
- The Explorers cut the deficit to one in the 22nd minute with Malena Balduzzi collecting the corner up top and bringing it into the circle with a sneak behind the back pass off to the left to Tatum Johnson for the reverse shot into the cage.
- Just 90 seconds later Johnson worked her way into the circle past three Lancers' defenders lifting the ball into the cage to even the match at 2-2.
- With just over a minute to play in the half Cat McFadden tipped it home off a pass from Balduzzi to put the Explorers in the lead, 3-2.
- La Salle expanded its lead to two, 4-2, when Balduzzi's shot up top hit the back post and landed right in front of Laura McCann on the left post for the goal.
- The momentum kept going for the Explorers in with McFadden getting yet another tip-in out front off the pass from Sofia Pla to give La Salle the 5-2 lead in the 48th minute.
- The Lancers responded with nine minutes left to bring the deficit back down to two, 5-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- McFadden and Johnson scored two goals apiece for La Salle. McFadden's two goals mark her third and fourth of the season and the first time she has recorded two goals in a single game in her career.
- Johnson's two goals put her at 10 for the season. The contest marks her second multi-goal game this year.
- McCann's goal marks her first ever career goal in the Blue & Gold.
- Balduzzi's two assists mark her first-career mutli-assist game.
- The teams were even in shots with 11 each and shots on goal with eight each.
- The Explorers held a clear edge over the Lancers in penalty corners 8-3.
- McCann led La Salle in shots and shots on goal with three.
- Ryan Curley recorded all 60 minutes in the cage making five saves on 10 shots faced.
