Second-Half Surge Falls Short Against Temple

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's basketball team overcame a deficit of 16 to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but a strong response from Temple was too strong for the Explorers to overcome dropping the contest 70-56 on Monday night.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle's offense was slow to start shooting just 20% (7-of-35) from the field in the first half led by a seven-point effort from Charity Shears who hit a three as the time ran out on the first 20 minutes to cut the Explorers' deficit to 12, 33-21.
  • The Explorers set the tone for a second-half comeback with Amy Jacobs hitting a three-pointer just 32 seconds into the start of the third quarter. La Salle held the 24-17 advantage over the Owls, thanks to an eight-point effort from Claire Jacobs including a 4-of-5 performance from the charity stripe, cutting the 12-point deficit down to five, 50-45, to end the quarter.
  • A 5-0 run to start the fourth comprised of a Shears three and Mia Jacobs jumper tied the game, 50-50, but Temple responded with 15 unanswered points through the next four minutes to put the game out of reach for the Explorers, 70-56.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Claire Jacobs led the night for the Explorers with 13 points from 4-of-8 shooting and 5-of-7 from the line.
  • Shears also ended the night in double-digits with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting including 2-of-5 from deep and 2-of-5 from the line.
  • Mia Jacobs led the battle at the boards with eight rebounds followed by sister Amy Jacobs with six.
  • Molly Masciantonio led the team in assists with six and committed just one turnover.
  • The Explorers struggled from the 3-point range shooting 25.9% and from the charity stripe with a 50% performance.
GAME NOTES:
  • La Salle is now 6-4 on the season, 3-3 when playing on the road and 0-2 in Big 5 play.
  • The Explorers are now 28-23 in the all-time series in Temple and 18-6 in the series when visiting the Owls. La Salle is on an eight-game skid in the series.
  • Claire Jacobs has now hit six games in double figures. The contest marks her first game with 10-plus points since playing Penn on Nov.29.
  • Shears has recorded her fifth 10-plus game of the season. The contest also marks her first since playing Penn.
