Phoebe Shaya of La Salle swimming & diving earned the first gold medal of her standout career as an Explorer in the one-meter dive as La Salle completed day one the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championships on Tuesday night at Spire Institute.
Shaya's score of 265.60 was good for the top spot by less than a point over Massachusetts' Emma Petrovich, who tallied a final score of 264.95 in a tightly contested final. Wednesday's performance marked the first gold medal for Shaya in the A-10 finals, and the fourth-consecutive championship appearance collecting a medal.
As a team, the women currently sit in seventh place with 62 points through the first five events. On the men's side, the Explorers also rank seventh with 50 points.
HOW THEY FINISHED:
- In the first final of the championships, La Salle's team of Lauren Fenn, Megan Heist, Sam Boyes, and Brynn Peterson finished in eighth in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1:44.45.
- The men's team followed with a seventh-place finish in the same event, as Alex Kuriawa, Zachary Wolbert, Trenton Burr, and Zack Miller clocked in at 1:30.97.
- While Shaya's gold medal highlighted the one-meter for the women, two other Explorers finished in the top-16—Kaitlyn Smykowski ranked finished in 12th after a fourth-place finish in the B final, while Julie D'Amore finished in 16th for La Salle.
- Boyes, Peterson, Carter, and Moser ranked 10th in 800-yard freestyle relay with a finals time of 7:37.22.
- The men's team of Wolbert, Burr, Miller, and Kuriawa competed again in the 800-free relay, placing in sixth at 6:46.60.
