Women's Water Polo | February 3, 2022
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The La Salle women's water polo team returns to the pool this Friday, Feb. 4 through Sunday, Feb. 6 for a series of five contests at the Bruno Classic, hosted by Brown. All contests will stream nationally on ESPN+.
The Explorers start the stretch facing off against Cal Baptist on Friday at 8 p.m. before returning to the pool on Saturday to take on Brown at 10:30 a.m. followed by Saint Francis (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m. La Salle will wrap up play for the weekend on Sunday against Pomona at 12 p.m. and Harvard at 3 p.m.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle enters the contest following a 2-2 weekend comprised of three road games and the Explorers home opener against Princeton.
- Kalista Hyham led the offensive effort for the Explorers over the weekend earning 21 points from 16 goals and five assists across the four games. Her efforts landed her the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
- Emma Gurasich dominated in the net for the Explorers recording two victories. She totaled 39 saves, six assists and four steals. Gurasich let up only 24 goals in four games and shutout four of the 14 quarters played.
- Rookie Francesca Co' had a great showing over the previous weekend recording a team-high nine assists. She added 13 points and four goals on the weekend
- As a squad, La Salle is shooting 40%. The Explorers are earning an average of 4.75 exclusions per game while committing on average 6.5 exclusions per contest.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS:
- The Lancers started their season slow against top-ranked teams in the nation, but are heating up coming off back-to-back wins currently holding a 2-4 overall record.
- Senior, Kira O'Donell, is CBU's leading scorer coming into the game with 12 goals scored
- O'Donell was named Golden Coast Conference Player of the Week for the fifth time in her career, extending her CBU women's water polo record.
- Senior attacker, Jamie Hutton, comes into the game against the Explorers with a team leading 19 points.
- Hutton almost made history in the Lancers' game against UC Santa Barbara tallying 5 assists, one off the Lancers' single-game record.
SCOUTING THE BEARS:
- The Bears come into this weekend's Bruno Classic with a 1-3 record and a tough 13-14 loss to UC Santa Barbara in overtime.
- The Bears' top scorers, Claire Pisani and Katie Dvonch, come into the weekend with team-high 7 goals apiece.
- Marley Presiado looks to add to her 41 saves on the season this weekend at the Bruno Classic as the Bears will play six games over the next few days.
SCOUTING THE RED FLASH:
- The Red Flash are coming into the Bruno Classic with a 4-0 record looking to continue its streak. The 4-0 run marks the best start in Saint Francis program history.
- The squad is coming off a commanding 19-4 victory against Mount St. Mary's (Md.) where freshman, Kimberly Frostad, led the way with 5 goals.
SCOUTING THE SAGEHENS:
- The Sagehens are traveling to Cambridge with a 1-3 record on the young season.
- Even after two tough losses last week, Paulina Correa was named Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Water Polo Offensive Athlete of the week.
- Correa notched two goals in the close loss to California Baptist last weekend.
- Against UC San Diego the Sagehens had five different goal scorers in the loss.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON:
- Harvard enters its next couple games with just two games played this season, significantly less than its opponents. The Crimson recorded victories in both contests.
- The 21st ranked Crimson Women's Water Polo team started its season strong against Villanova with junior, Grace Thawley, netting six goals in the first game.
- Zoe Banks, junior, made six saves for the Crimson in their second game against Villanova while holding the Wildcats to only four goals.
- This is the fourth straight season Harvard has started the season 2-0.
