La Salle Drops Two Games to End Bruno Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The La Salle women's water polo team dropped its final two contests in the Bruno Classic against Pomona and Harvard on Sunday. The Explorers are now 3-6 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (POMONA):
  • The teams remained even after the first period with two goals apiece. It was the second quarter that proved to be the difference maker with Pomona holding a 3-1 advantage over the Explorers to take a 5-3 lead into the second half.
  • The third period was all La Salle, securing four goals to Pomona's two in the frame. The four-goal effort tied the teams at 7-7 heading into the final period of play. Pomona came out on top leading the period 2-1 to win the game 9-8.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (POMONA):
  • Tatum Lomax stepped up on the offense for La Salle with three goals. She added one steal in the game.
  • Kalista Hyham found the back of the net twice. She added one steal and drew three exclusions.
  • Sophie Appler, Sarah DeFusco and Karle Linden each tallied a goal in the game.
  • Madison Martinez totaled a team-high three assists. She added one steal and earned one exclusion.
  • Shanna Zuanich helped lead the defensive effort outside of the net with three swipes.
  • Emma Gurasich tallied seven saves, three assists and one steal.
  • La Salle won the sprint in three of the four periods with Appler winning the three races for the Explorers.
HOW IT HAPPENED (HARVARD):
  • Harvard jumped out of the gate with four goals in the first period while La Salle was only able to put one in the back of the net.
  • The Explorers were unable to find their momentum in the second period with Harvard getting the 2-0 shutout to take a 6-1 lead into the half.
  • Harvard outscored La Salle 9-4 in the final two periods to take the 15-5 victory over the Explorers.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (HARVARD):
  • Madelyn Koerper was the leading scorer for La Salle with two goals. She shot 100% on the afternoon and added one steal.
  • Hyham was stopped up by the defense scoring just one goal. She earned a team-high three exclusions and tallied one assists and one steal.
  • Mia Mattingly found the back of the net in the game alongside Sophia Boettner who scored just a single goal.
  • DeFusco swiped the ball a team-high two times and added one assist.
  • Gurasich and Caitlin Valentine shared time in the net. Gurasich and Valentine each made seven saves with one of Gurasich's being a penalty shot.
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle takes a three-week hiatus before returning to the pool for just two games on Feb. 26 against Wagner and Iona.
