Box Score 2 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The La Salle women's water polo team dropped a nip-and-tuck match against host Brown, 9-8, before bouncing back and handing Saint Francis U. an 8-6 defeat on the second day of the Bruno Classic on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED (BROWN):
- La Salle opened the match on fire, and took a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
- The margin remained two at halftime, before the Bears knotted the contest at 6-6 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
- Brown scored early in the period to take a 7-6 advantage before the Explorers notched the equalizer with 2:34 remaining.
- With just 1:10 left in regulation, the Bears took the lead for good. An insurance goal made it 9-7, before the Explorers scored with seconds left to put the final margin at one.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (BROWN):
HOW IT HAPPENED (SAINT FRANCIS):
- The Explorers once again got out to a hot start, taking a 4-2 lead after the first quarter.
- The Red Flash cut their deficit to one at 5-4 heading into halftime, but La Salle responded by regaining a two-goal margin heading into the fourth quarter.
- La Salle and Saint Francis scored a goal apiece in the final frame, with the Explorers coming away with the 8-6 win.
- SFU entered the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SAINT FRANCIS):
- Hyham and Koerper led the Explorers with two goals each, while Sophia Appler assisted on three of La Salle's eight goals.
- Also finding the back of the net were Martinez, DeFusco, Karle Linden, and Shanna Zuanich.
- DeFusco tallied three steals in the match.
- Guarsich had 15 saves, two assists and a steal for the Explorers in net.
