Men’s Basketball Falls to Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 Tournament

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  The La Salle men's basketball team saw defeat in the nation's capital on Thursday afternoon, falling to Saint Louis in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament inside Capital One Arena.
 
The season concludes for the Explorers, who finished 11-19 on the year. La Salle finished on a four-game win streak before falling to the Billikens.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After failing to find the bottom of the net in the first round, Jhamir Brickus quickly found the target to score seven of the first nine points for the Explorers.
  • Anwar Gill drove and scooped a layup past a Billiken defender to give the Explorers their first lead of the game at 11-9, Saint Louis responding with a 10-0 run as La Salle was held off the scoreboard for 6:29, Brickus stopping the bleeding with a pair of free throws.
  • Jack Clark grabbed his first basket of the day, breaking a run of only one basket in the Explorers' last 15 attempts as Saint Louis extended the gap to 26-15.
  • The Billikens extended their lead to 34-16, holding the Explorers to just 17.2% from the field heading into the break.
  • Saint Louis scored 11 of the first 15 points to start the second, building the lead to 25.
  • The fifth seed saw their lead grow to as much as 33, La Salle cutting the deficit to 19 with eight baskets on 10 possessions.
  • Khalil Brantley capped of a 12-2 scoring run, splitting two defenders while finishing at the rack and drawing contact to cap off the and-one opportunity.
  • Brantley would lead a late charge with 11 points for the Explorers, but Saint Louis managed to quell any late charges from La Salle to move on to the Atlantic 10 quarterfinals with a 71-51 win.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Brickus and Brantley led the Explorers with 11 points each, the only two to finish in double-digits for the Explorers.
  • Clark and Clifton Moore combined for just 2-19 of the field, Moore playing just 25 minutes after struggling with a previous lower leg injury suffered against Duquesne. Clark added a team-high nine rebounds and three assists in the defeat.
  • The Explorers finished just 17-54 (31.5%) from the field, 2-13 (15.4%) from deep.
  • Saint Louis dominated the glass with a 48-33 advantage that led to a 14-3 second chance point advantage. The Billikens also controlled the interior with a 42-22 margin in points in the paint.
  • Gibson Jimerson finished with a game-high 19 points for the Billikens, Francis Okoro finishing with a 17 point, 13 rebound double-double. Fred Thatch Jr. totaled 10 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
  • The Billikens were held to their lowest shooting percentage in the three matchups with La Salle, ending 27-61 (44.3%) from the field.
  • La Salle's longest win streak of the season ended at four, entering the game with the longest streak in the conference.
