Johnston Scores Career High Seven Goals in Road Loss to Siena

LOUDONVILLE, NY - Fifth-year senior Emily Johnston had a career day on Saturday, pouring in a career-high seven goals while eclipsing the 100-goal mark in her standout career as an Explorer.

However, a five goal performance from Mary Soures and 12 saves by Ally Mervine led the Saints past La Salle 11-9 on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johnston wasted no time getting on the score sheet for La Salle, scoring just 1:32 into the game to give La Salle a 1-0 lead.
  • The Saints took control the rest of the period, scoring the final four goals of the frame including two from Soures to take a 4-1 lead into the second.
  • Johnston continued to lead the La Salle offense, scoring three of the next four goals of the game in the second period to bring the Explorers within a goal, 5-4.
  • After two-consecutive Siena goals, Johnston scored her fifth goal of the opening half to bring the halftime score to 7-5. The five goals in just 30 minutes matched Johnston's career-high, as well as the most by an Explorer this season after Tori Rolon scored five in the season opener.
  • In an even third quarter, each side accumulated seven shots while Siena held the edge in goals, 3-2.
  • Maddie Henderson led the offensive effort for La Salle in the quarter, scoring two goals to give her seven on the season.
  • Johnston continued her scoring eruption in the fourth, scoring two goals including one on a feed from Anderson with 1:04 remaining to cut the Siena lead to 11-9.
  • However, the Saints won the final draw control and were able to kill most of the remaining time to hang on for a 11-9 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Along with her seven goals, Johnston led the team with six draw controls and tied for the team lead with two ground balls as the Ridley, Pa. native continues to do it all for La Salle.
  • Fellow midfielder Maddie Henderson stuffed the stat sheet as well, racking up two goals, an assist, two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
  • Julia Dellaratta made the start in goal for La Salle before Kelli McGroarty took over in the second quarter. The pair combined for ten saves while conceding 11 goals.
  • Shot on goal totals were even at 21-21, while SIena held a small edge in total shots 28-27.
  • Draw controls were even at 11-11, while the Saints led in ground balls by a wide margin, 26-11.
