Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Va. – The La Salle women's water polo team notched its 11
th and 12
th consecutive victories on Saturday defeating VMI 17-6 and Iona 15-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED (VMI):
- The game remained scoreless for the first 1:30, but the Explorers quickly found their grove with back-to-back Kalista Hyham goals to take a 2-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the frame. La Salle kept the Keydets scoreless throughout the rest of the first period while putting up two more goals of its own to take a 4-0 lead into the second.
- The teams traded goals (2-2) through the first four minutes with La Salle maintaining a four-point lead, 6-2. The Explorers went on a 2-0 run to end the frame and take a six-point lead into the second half, 8-2.
- La Salle was once again the first to strike in the third period, but VMI quickly answered to keep the deficit to six, 9-3, with three minutes remaining. The Explorers once again ended the frame on a 2-0 spurt to extend their lead to eight, 11-3, heading into the final period of play.
- The Explorers broke open the scoring in the fourth period with six goals while holding VMI to three to claim the 17-6 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED (IONA):
- The score remained close through the first eight minutes with La Salle pulling ahead for a single point lead to end the first frame, 4-3.
- The Gaels pulled ahead by two, 8-6, to end the first half with a five-goal performance in the frame while keeping the Explorers to just two goals.
- La Salle put up a four-goal effort in the third stanza, but was edged out by Iona with the single goal advantage to take a 13-10 lead into the final period.
- The Explorers found their grove in the final eight minutes holding the Gaels to a single goal while putting up five of their own to take the narrow 15-14 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (IONA):
- Hyham continued to be the shining star on offense for the Explorers with a team-high five goals. She converted every shot she took on the net in the game. The graduate student earned six exclusions while adding three steals and two assists.
- Linden, DeFusco and Martinez each found the back of the net twice in the game while Shanna Zuanich, Francesca Co', Koerper and Woren scored one goal apiece.
- Zuanich was the teams' leading helping hand with five assists.
- Linden led the defensive effort from the field with four steals and three blocks.
- Gurasich made 12 saves in the net and added two steals and one assist.
- La Salle went 2-2 in sprints.
