Haley Hunt’s Career Day in Goal for Lehigh Leads Mountain Hawks Past La Salle

BETHLEHEM, PA - The Explorer offense out-shot Lehigh 31-26, but a career day in goal by Mountain Hawk keeper Hayley Hunt and efficient offense led Lehigh to a 13-5 win over La Salle on Saturday afternoon. 

Despite facing 22 shots on goal, Hunt conceded just five goals while making 17 saves in a milestone day for the sophomore. Preseason All-Patriot League attacker Gabby Schnieder led the Lehigh (1-2) offense with five goals and two assists, as the Mountain Hawks used multiple scoring runs to pull away frrom La Salle. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Mountain Hawk defense was stifling in the opening quarter, as La Salle (2-3) was held scoreless through the first 15 minutes for the first time this season. 
  • Lehigh goalkeeper Haylen Hunt made six saves in the first 15 minutes to keep the Explorers out of the net. 
  • Goals from Olivia Memeger, Nora Giordano, and Gabby Schneider gave the Explorers a 3-0 lead at the end of the opening period. 
  • The Explorer offense woke up in the second quarter, scoring three-consecutive goals to level the score at 3-3. 
  • Kiki Venza ignited the La Salle run, scoring her fifth goal of the season just 47 seconds into the quarter to bring the Explorers within two. 
  • Emily Johnston's 10th goal of the season at 12:39 made the score 3-2 before Erin Welsh tied the score just 16 seconds later to knot the game at 3-3. 
  • However, Hunt and Lehigh would shut down the La Salle offense the rest of the quarter while the Mountain Hawk offense rattled off a 4-0 run to take a commanding lead into the half. 
  • Katia Carnevale scored twice during the Lehigh run, and Olivia Memeger and Giordano added goals to give Lehigh a 7-3 advantage at the half. 
  • Hunt made 11 saves in just the first half, keeping an Explorer offense that outshot Lehigh 21-14 in the first half at bay. 
  • Johnston scored her second of the game and team-high 11th of the season to open the scoring in the second half, bringing La Salle with three at 7-4 at the 12:50 mark.
  • Lehigh's defense again locked down the Explorers, holding La Salle scoreless for over 17 minutes while going on a game-sealing 5-0 run to give Lehigh a 12-4 lead. 
  • Claudia Steinmetz scored her fifth goal of the season with 8:44 remaining to halt the Lehigh run before Lehigh scored again in the closing minutes to bring the final to 13-5. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Lehigh goalkeeper set a career high with 17 saves in her first win of the season. Wednesday's performance marks the third-straight game with at least 13 saves by Hunt to start her season. 
  • A Preseason All-Patriot League selection, Gabby Schneider led Lehigh with five goals and seven points in the game. Olivia Memeger added a hat trick with four total points. 
  • Johnston's two goals gave the fifth-year senior 11 on the season for La Salle, a team-high.
  • The Explorers held the edge in shots, 31-26 and shots on goal, 22-20.
  • Julia Dellaratta made five saves while allowing seven goals in the first half. Kelli McGroarty took over for La Salle in the second half, making two stops while allowing six goals. 
  • Defender Juliana Harden led La Salle with five gruond balls and four caused turnovers, both season-highs.
  • Both Lehigh and La Salle caused 11 turnovers, while Lehigh turned it over a total of 22 times compared to 15 by the Explorers.

After three-straight road tilts, the Explorers will return to McCarthy Stadium on Saturday, March 5 to take on Manhattan.
