Explorers Split Set of Games in Brooklyn

 BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The La Salle women's water polo team recorded its first loss in 13 games against LIU (20-18) on Saturday evening. The Explorers then rallied back with an 11-7 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn to end the night.

HOW IT HAPPENED (LIU):
  • The teams remained even through the first eight minutes of the game finishing the first period in a  5-5 tie.
  • The second frame was all La Salle with the Explorers putting up five more goals while holding the Sharks to just three to take a 10-8 lead into the second half of the game.
  • St. Francis found its momentum in the second half tallying six goals in each period while holding the Explorers to just eight in the half to take the two-point, 20-18, victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (LIU): HOW IT HAPPENED (ST. FRANCIS):
  • La Salle jumped out to an early lead over the Terriers putting up double the goals in the first period to take a two-point advantage into the second, 4-2.
  • The Explorers narrowly edged out St. Francis before the half holding the Terriers to another two goals while totaling three of their own to take the 7-4 lead into the second half of the game.
  • St. Francis remained consistent putting up another two goals in the third frame, but silenced the Explorers' offense to just a single goal to bring the deficit back to two, 8-6.
  • La Salle had the final say with a three-goal effort in the final frame while allowing just one from the Terriers for the 11-7 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (ST. FRANCIS):
  • Hyham and Martinez teamed up for six of the Explorers' 11 goals with three each.
  • Koerper was the only other Explorer to score multiple with two in the game.
  • Karle Linden, Hannah Woren and Zuanich each added one goal.
  • DeFusco led the Explorers in assists with a team-high three.
  • Linden and Martinez made quite the defensive pair in the game totaling five steals each.
  • Gurasich recorded five saves, two steals and two assists.
  • Caitlin Valentine saw action in the net with two saves and one steal.
  • La Salle went 3-1 in sprints.
