FAIRFAX, Va. - After falling behind 4-0 early, the La Salle lacrosse team stormed back to tie the contest at halftime, and received big performances from sophomore goalkeeper
Kelli McGroarty and junior
Tori Rolon to edge past George Mason, 11-10, in Atlantic 10 action on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Patriots scored the first four goals of the game before sophomore Maddie Henderson found the back of the cage with just under two minutes to go in the first quarter to put La Salle on the board.
- George Mason bumped its lead back to four at 5-1 prior to the close of the period, before the Explorers stormed back in the second.
- La Salle scored all four goals during the second quarter, including three from Rolon, to knot the contest heading into intermission.
- The two teams went back and forth throughout the third, with neither team taking more than a one-goal lead.
- Graduate student Maddie Dachowski scored twice in the frame, while Henderson also cashed in an opportunity, before a last-second goal by GMU gave the home team a 9-8 lead heading to the last quarter.
- La Salle's leading goal scorer Emily Johnston had been held without a goal through the first three quarters, before finally getting untracked in the fourth.
- Johnston scored twice to give the visitors a 10-9 lead at the 7:31 mark of the fourth.
- With 5:50 left in the stanza, Olivia O'Brien scored her fourth goal of the game to once again tie the score.
- Following a free-position shot that was saved by Meghan Deehan, Rolon had another chance from the eight-meter mark and scored to put La Salle in front, 11-10.
- From there, the Explorers clamped down defensively and did not allow a shot attempt over the final 4:40 of the game. GMU had position with under two minutes left, but La Salle forced a shot-clock violation and milked the clock the rest of the way to secure the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- McGroarty tallied a career-high 18 saves, with nine in each half, to pick up the win in net for the Explorers.
- The 18 saves tied for the second-most in an Atlantic 10 game this season.
- Rolon matched a season high with four goals on the afternoon, three of which came in the second quarter.
- George Mason outshot the Explorers, 33-24, and 28 of those shots were on net.
