Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The La Salle women's water polo team and the Wagner Seahawks went into the second half knotted at 3-3, but the Explorers couldn't pull ahead dropping the contest 9-5 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game remained scoreless through the 3:43 mark with Wagner going on a 2-0 run to take the lead over the Explorers. Francesca Co' put La Salle on the board firing the ball past multiple Seahawk defenders and into the net at the 1:33 mark to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.
- Kalista Hyham found an open Sarah DeFusco to tie it up, 2-2, with 2:24 remaining in the second frame. Less than 30 seconds later the Seahawks regained a single point lead, 3-2. With just 21 seconds to go in the first half, Hyham drew the penalty placing Co' in front of the net for the five-meter shot. The freshman fired the ball past the Wagner goalie to tie it up, 3-3, to end the first half.
- The Seahawks picked up the momentum in the third period putting together a 4-0 run to pull ahead 7-3 with 2:30 remaining in the period. Hyham drew an exclusion on a breakaway for the man-up goal at the 0:32 mark to cut the Explorers' deficit to three, 7-4, at the end of the frame.
- Wagner held the Explorers scoreless through the majority of the frame putting up two more goals to take a five-point lead, 9-4. Hyham put up one final goal for La Salle with 37 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to four, 9-5, to end the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Co' and Hyham led the scoring effort for La Salle with two goals apiece. Co' also fired off a team-high eight shots at the goal.
- DeFusco was the only other goal scorer for La Salle with one.
- Hyham led the team in exclusions drawn with five. She also led in assists with two.
- Co' led the defensive effort from the field for La Salle with a team-high two steals and two blocks.
- Emma Gurasich played the entire game in net making 10 saves while adding one assist and one steal.
