Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The La Salle women's water polo team took on the Marist Red Foxes to determine the third and fourth-places finishers of the MAAC Championships on Sunday morning.
The Explorers took an early lead and held the edge over the Red Foxes through the majority of play, but a six-goal effort from Marist in the final quarter was too much for La Salle to overcome, dropping the contest 11-7 for fourth place finish in the tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Madelyn Koerper put La Salle on the board after a scoreless five minutes to give the Explorers a 1-0 advantage over Marist heading into the second period.
- The Red Foxes capitalized off a loose ball out front of the net to tie it, 1-1, just 30 seconds into the second frame. Hannah Woren answered back less than a minute later to re-extend the Explorers' single-point lead, 2-1. The back-and-forth effort continued at the 6:18 mark with Marist tying the score again, 2-2. Kalista Hyham had the last say putting the Explorers up at the one-minute mark to take a 3-2 lead into the second half.
- The Red Foxes tied it up, 3-3, just a minute into the third stanza. Shanna Zuanich connected with Koerper out front of the net for the quick deflection to regain the lead for La Salle, 4-3, at the six-minute mark. The teams traded goals through the remainder of the frame with La Salle taking a narrow 6-5 lead into the final period.
- The Red Foxes put together a 4-0 run in the fourth period to pull ahead by La Salle 9-6. Hyham stopped the bleeding at the 1:38 mark with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to two, 9-7. Marist found the back of the net two more times before the end of the game to win 11-7.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Hyham, DeFusco and Koerper led the scoring effort for La Salle with two goals apiece. Woren added on goal to the Explorers total.
- Zuanich, DeFusco, Woren, Koerper, Francesca Co' and Casey Malone each added an assist in the game.
- Karle Linden dominated the defensive effort from the field for the Explorers with a team-high three steals and three blocks.
- Emma Guraisch made five saves and added one assist and two steals.
