Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's water polo team dropped a close contest against Marist in the morning, 10-9, before returning to Kirk Pool in the evening to down Siena 18-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED (MARIST):
- Marist capitalized off a man up advantage early in the first to get on the board and take a single-point lead over the Explorers, 1-0. Francesca Co' and Madelyn Koerper combined for a 2-0 run through the remainder of the frame to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.
- Kalista Hyham put one past sister Marina Hyham early in the second frame to give La Salle a two-goal lead, 3-1, with 6:51 remaining. Marist responded with a goal just a minute later to start a 3-0 to take the lead, 4-3, with 4:16 remaining. Shanna Zuanich put the Explorers back in drawing out the keeper to find the back of the net at the 3:51 mark. Co' finishsed the job firing the ball at the goal to give La Salle the 5-4 lead. An Emma Gurasich ejection set the Red Foxes up to tie it up, 5-5, to end the first half.
- Marist started on a 2-0 run shutdown at the 5:32 mark when Co' threw a rocket from half-pool to meet the hands of Madison Martinez for the goal to bring La Salle back within one point, 7-6. A power-play opportunity at the 3:14 mark gave the Red Foxes back a two-point advantage, 8-6, but a Zuanich and Co' combination brought the Explorers back within one, 8-7, to end the third.
- La Salle took a 2-1 run through the 1:56 mark to tie the game twice. The Red Foxes pulled ahead with 1:44 remaining to secure the 10-9 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (MARIST):
- Co' was the front-runner yet again for the Explorers with a team-high four goals in the contest.
- Martinez fired two into the back of the net while Zuanich, Koerper and Hyham added one goal each.
- Zuanich set up a team-high four goals in the game.
- Hannah Woren and Co' led the defensive charge from the field recording seven steals apiece.
- Gurasich made five saves and added three steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED (SIENA):
- Siena struck first, but the Explorers put together a 2-0 run over the course of 40 seconds to pull ahead, 2-1, with 4:41 remaining in the frame. After a scoreless two minutes, Karle Linden and Co' combined for a 2-0 performance to give La Salle a three-point lead, 4-1. The Saints struck once more before the end of the first to cut the difference back down to two, 4-2.
- The teams traded goals through the first six minutes of the frame when Siena pushed one past Gurasich to pull within one point, 6-5. The Explorers took a 2-0 run through the final minute to take a three-point advantage into the second half, 8-5.
- The Explorers started the stanza with a 2-0 run to gain a five-point edge over the Saints until a goal from Siena at the 4:16 mark closed the gap to four, 10-6. The Explorers put themselves right back in it with a Zuanich goal to kick start a 3-0 spurt to pull ahead by seven, 13-6. Siena found the back of the net just once more in the frame, but a Co' free shot at 0:19 maintained La Salle's seven-point lead, 14-7, at the end of the period.
- La salle started strong with a 2-0 run in the fourth period to pull ahead by nine, 16-7, with four minutes left. The Saints found the back of the net three more times while holding the Explorers to one goal to cut the deficit back down to seven, 17-10. Freshman Sophia Boettner scored for the Explorers with just 0:08 left to secure the eight-point victory, 18-10.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (SIENA):
- Hyahm, Co' and Zuanich led the scoring efforts for La Salle each finding the back of the net four times.
- Linden added two goals while Tatum Lomax, Sophie Appler, Casey Malone and Woren contributed one goal each.
- Martinez and Co' led the team in assists with three each.
- Linden, Martinez and Co' led the defensive effort from the field with three steals apiece. Linden also contributed a team-high three blocked shots.
- Gurasich and Caitlin Valentine shared time in the net. Gurasich made eight saves in the game and added one assist and one steal. Valentine made two saves.
