Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's water team suffered a 21-11 loss to MAAC leader, Wagner, to start the day, but rallied against Iona in a nail-biting 17-16 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WAGNER):
- Wagner got off to a quick six-point lead holding the Explorers scoreless through the end of the first quarter, 6-0.
- The Seahawks put up two more in the first 2:30 to pull ahead by eight. Wagner found the back of the net twice more for a 10-goal advantage before Shanna Zuanich broke the drought for La Salle to cut the deficit to nine, 10-1. Zuanich struck again at the 1:14 mark with a five-meter attempt that found its way past the Seahawks' goalie to lessen the gap to eight, 10-2. Wagner took a 2-0 run through the remainder of the period to pull back ahead by 10 heading into the second half, 12-2.
- Wagner scored first to start the third but a Jaycee Morris goal kept it within 10 points for the Explorers, 13-3. The Seahawks extended their lead to 12 with a 2-0 run through the 2:16 mark when a Sophia Boetnner goal cut it to 11, 15-4. Francesca Co' followed up less than a minute later to bring it back to a 10-point deficit, 15-5. The teams traded goals through the final minutes to end the third at 16-6.
- The Seahawks started the final stanza on a 3-0 run to pull ahead 19-6. Wagner and the Explorers' Kalista Hyham traded goals keeping the deficit to 13, 21-8. La Salle ended the frame on a 3-0 run to cut the gap down to 10, 21-11, to end the contest.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (WAGNER):
- Co', Zuanich and Hyham led the scoring effort for the Explorers with two goals apiece.
- Tatum Lomax, Sarah DeFusco, Hannah Woren, Lomax and Boetnner added one goal each.
- Co' led the assist effort for La Salle with two.
- Hyham led the defensive effort from the field with two steals and one block. She also added a team-high six exclusions drawn.
- Emma Gurasich and Caitlin Valentine shared time in the net. Gurasich made one save in the game while Valentine totaled seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED (IONA):
- The teams traded girls early on, but a 2-0 run for the Gaels put them up by two, 3-1. Hyham brought the deficit to one with 1:24 remaining followed by back-to-back Co' goals to tie it at the end of the first frame, 3-3.
- An early goal in the second from Iona tied it 4-4. The teams tied the score two more times in the stanza to knot it at 6-6 heading into the second half.
- The Gaels started it off early again to pull ahead by one, 7-6, just 24 seconds into play. La Salle answered the call 10 seconds later with a DeFusco goal to tie it again, 7-7. The teams knotted at 8-8 once more before a 2-0 run for Iona through the 3:18 mark gave them a two-point edge, 10-8. The Explorers held the 2-1 advantage through the remainder of the frame to trail by just one heading into the final period, 11-10.
- A Co' goal just 17 seconds into the final frame tied the contest up at 11-11. The teams tied the score four more times before a DeFusco goal pushes La Salle up by a single point, 16-15. Hyham sealed the deal with an empty net goal at the 0:16 mark to give the Explorers a two-point advantage but a buzzer-beater goal for the Gaels brought the margin back down to one to end the contest, 17-16.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (IONA):
- Hyham led the offensive effort for the Explorers with six goals. Co' followed closely behind contributing four.
- Zuanich and DeFusco added three apiece while Woren tallied one.
- Zuanich led the charge for assists in the game with four.
- Hyham earned a team-high seven exclusions and made three swipes.
- Gurasich had three saves in the game while adding one assist and one steal.

- The Explorers return to Kirk Pool tomorrow, Apr. 10 at 1 p.m. to take on MAAC and local rival Villanova in the teams' first of two meetings this season.
