Men’s Soccer Opens the Season with a 5-3 Win over Stonehill College

Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's soccer team started the season strong at McCarthy Stadium with a 5-3 victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks. La Salle is now 1-0 on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Stonehill opened the scoring in the fourth minute to put the Skyhawks up 1-0 early.
  • After 39 minutes without a goal, the Explorers answered back tying the game up at one. Omari Cotterell scored his first goal of the season with a header. Justin Brunow passed the ball to Giammarco Rodio, who headed the ball to Cotterell, who put it in the back of the net.
  • The go-ahead goal was scored in the 51st minute by Justin Brunow. His first goal of the season comes off a rebound from the goalie. Omari Cotterell put a shot on the net and then the rebound was put in the net by Brunow to put La Salle up 2-1.
  • Shortly after, Isak Sedin put the Explorers up 3-1 with a goal finding the top corner of the net. Brunow had the secondary assist, with a pass in the center of the box, which gave Viske Stian the primary assist, passing the ball to Sedin for the goal.
  • Omari Cotterell scored his second goal of the night in the 55th minute. It was a breakaway goal that he got passed the goalkeeper for the 4-1 lead.
  • In the 64th minute Stonehill cut the deficit in half, making the score 4-2.
  • Two minutes later, the game grew tighter with a goal in the 66th minute by Stonehill to make the score 4-3.
  • In the final minute of the game, Talla Faye gave the Blue & Gold a 5-3 lead. Drew Blackwell had the assist that led to Faye putting the ball through the goalkeeper's legs and into the back of the net.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Cotterell, Brunow, Sedin, and Faye all scored their first goals of the season.
  • Cotterell had two goals on the night and was the leading scorer for the Explorers.
  • There were 20 total fouls on the night, 14 by Stonehill and six by La Salle.
  • La Salle led in shots taken with 26, and Stonehill had 12.
  • Cotterell was not only the leading scorer, but also led La Salle with three shots on goal.
