Walker's First-Half Tally Leads Women's Soccer Past Colgate, 1-0

HAMILTON, N.Y. - Freshman Ricshya Walker scored the game-winning goal early in the first half, and a strong defensive effort throughout led the La Salle women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Colgtate on Thursday evening.

The victory improved the Explorers to 3-0-0 on the road this season and 3-1-0 overall, while the Raiders fell to 0-3-1 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Right around the 10-minute mark of the opening half, junior Kelli McGroarty lofted a pass over the defense towards the Colgate net.
  • The ball bounded once right at the top of the 18-yard box, before Walker caught up and headed a perfectly-timed shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
  • The goal was Walker's first as an Explorer, and the helper was McGroarty's team-leading third of the season.
  • La Salle controlled much of the play in the first 45 minutes, outshooting the home team by an 11-6 margin.
  • The second stanza was a defensive struggle, with the two teams combining for six shots total.
  • Colgate had four of them, all of which were on frame. The Raiders had a pair of chances over the final 10 minutes of action, only to be denied by sophomore Michela Auguadro.
  • Auguadro made five saves to record her third shutout win of the 2022 campaign.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Overall, the Explorers held a 13-10 edge in shots but Colgate had a narrow 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The corner kick battle went the way of La Salle, who had six as opposed to Colgate's two.
  • McGroarty led La Salle with three shots in 90 minutes of action, while Walker, sophomore Katie McCormick, and her classmate Haley Grschey each had two.
  • Emma Hickey made three saves for the Raiders.
UP NEXT
