RICHMOND, Va. - A penalty kick in the 25th minute of action proved to be the difference as VCU's Aisha Maughan found the back of the net from the spot to give the Rams enough offense to secure a 1-0 win over the La Salle women's soccer team on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Maughan was the player to earn the penalty opportunity for the home team, as she drew a foul in the box midway through the first half.
• The junior from Scotland fired a shot past Explorers goalkeeper Michela Auguadro to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
• La Salle had a chance right before halftime, as Leah Giles had her attempt turned away by VCU's Whitney Horton.
• Defenses reigned supreme in the second half, as the two teams combined for just seven shots over the final 45 minutes.
• Giles had another prime scoring shot in the 89th m inute but Horton was there again to preserve the shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

• VCU held a 13-4 edge in shots over the first 45 minutes and 16-8 overall.
• The Rams also had seven corner kicks to La Salle's one.
• Auguadro finished with five saves for the Explorers.
