PHILADELPHIA —
Fousseyni Drame scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, but the La Salle men's basketball team could not come away with a win against rival Saint Joseph's as the Hawks posted a 71-59 victory on Monday in its nationally televised Atlantic-10 game Tom Gola Arena at TruMark Financial Center.
With the loss, the Explorers dropped to 2-3 in A-10 play and 8-10 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Explorers got off to a rough start, as the Hawks jumped out to a 12-0 lead.
- The Explorers managed to trim the deficit to 25-18 with 7:50 left after Rokas Jocius provided a boost with two of his six points in the half.
- However, the Hawks went on a 14-9 run to close the half to take a 39-27 into the break.
- In the second half, the Hawks extended their lead to 59-39 after going on a 20-12 run in the first 10 minutes.
- The Explorers fought back, as they trimmed the Hawks' lead down to 60-51 with 4:46 left after going on a 12-1 run. Drame scored six of the team's 12 points during that stretch, included a two-handed jam off a Khalil Brantley pass.
- Unfortunately, the Hawks fended off the Explorers by hitting three jumpers and made five free throws to seal the win.
GAME NOTES
- Drame surpassed his previous career high of 22 points, which he had done twice in his career. The senior forward's 13 rebounds — 11 of which came in the second half — were a season high for him as well.
- With his 24 points and 13 rebounds, Drame became the first La Salle player to post a double-double this season. The last double-double from an Explorer came from Jack Clark (20 points, 13 rebounds) against Saint Joseph's in last year's 63-56 win in the A-10 first round.
- Drame also matched his career high in steals with four. The Bamako, Mali native had four steal's in the Explorers' 72-60 win over Queens (N.C.) on Nov. 15.
- Khalil Brantley matched his career high in steals as well with five and added a team-high five assists. The sophomore guard had five steals in the Explorers' game against Temple on Nov. 30.
UP NEXT
- The Explorers will hit the road on Saturday to face St Louis in another nationally televised A-10 game. The game will be on USA Network. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
