La Salle Earns Fifth Straight Win Behind Johnson’s Hat Trick

ST. LOUIS – The Explorers are leaving St. Louis with another conference win and their fifth straight after topping the Billikens 6-1. La Salle now goes to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The offensive attack was in full force for La Salle early in the contest. The Explorers put off two shots before the five-minute mark in the first quarter.
  • The Explorer's leading goal-scorer got the game's first goal 5:14 into the contest. Clara Larripa now has ten goals this season.
  • Saint Louis was able to respond quickly to the Explorer goal. Olivia French scored the equalizing goal for the Billikens and put the game at 1-1.
  • Sophia Wasyliw was able to break the tie for the Explorers in the second quarter. She took in a pass from Sol Espona and found the back of the cage to give La Salle the 2-1 lead.
  • Early in the third quarter the Explorer lead was increased thanks to a goal from Tatum Johnson. Larripa and Camila Daud had the assists on the goal.
  • Johnson was not done scoring as she netted her second goal of the game just one minute after her first. The Blue & Gold now had a 4-1 lead.
  • The Explorers added another goal thanks to Johnson. The hat trick for Johnson was in a seven-minute span and broke the game wide open for La Salle.
  • Before the quarter expired, Julianna Smyth added a goal of her own to put the visitors on top by five.
  • The fourth quarter remained scoreless for both teams.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Johnson scored her first career hat trick in today's contest and is now second on the team in goals scored (8).
  • La Salle got off 19 shots, seven of which coming from Johnson. Eight different Explorers got off shots.
  • The La Salle defense allowed only four shots from Saint Louis, only two were on goal.
  • The Blue & Gold have now won 14 games over the Billikens in their 17-year history.
 
UP NEXT:
  • La Salle will be back in action next Friday, October 20 when they travel to face the VCU Rams in conference play.
