Explorers Drop 2023-24 Home Opener to Maine

Box Score PHILADELPHIA – La Salle fell to the Maine Black Bears Thursday night by a score of 58-48 in another game led by Aryss Macktoon on the scoring front.
 
The Explorers will be back in action quickly as the face the American University Eagles as part of a double header on Saturday afternoon starting at 12:00 p.m.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Black Bears came out strong on offense controlling the game from the tip. Anne Simon made her name early in this one as she converted the first points of the game and contributed five points, two rebounds, one block, and a steal in the first ten minutes.
  • Macktoon also gave solid minutes to La Salle early in the contest as she totaled seven points in the opening frame.
  • The second quarter went similarly to the first with Maine jumping out early and gaining a lead, but the Explorers fighting back toward the end. Hailey Chiles was able to find her teammates on two separate occasions late in the half, once to Molly Masciantonio and once to Emma Egan to cut the Black Bear lead to two at the break.
  • The third quarter was all Maine. Adiranna Smith and Anne Simon combined for almost ten points in the third quarter to aid in the Maine lead. The Black Bears found themselves up by seven going into the last ten minutes of play.  
  • Maine did a great job containing Macktoon late in the game to prevent any chance of a La Salle comeback. Macktoon was held to two points in the last quarter, finishing the game with 13 points total.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Both games played this season finished with Macktoon as the team's leading scorer. As a freshman she is now up to 30 points in her two games played.
  • La Salle forced 22 turnovers in the contest tonight, Emilee Tahata had four steals of her own.
  • Laia Monclova saw her first action this season and was a contributor off the boards. She collected one offensive and one defensive rebounds in her two minutes of play.
  • Jolene Armendariz's physical game aided in her leading La Salle for the second game this season in rebounds. She brought in four tonight and brings her season total to 14, ten defensively.
