LEWISBURG, Pa. - The La Salle women's water polo team earned a pair of victories on the final day of the Bucknell Invitational Sunday, taking a convincing 15-4 decision over Mercyhurst before concluding its three-game weekend with a thrilling 5-4 triumph over Saint Francis U.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Mercyhurst):
- The Explorers took an 8-1 lead into halftime and never looked back, controlling play for the majority of the match against the Lakers.
- La Salle extended its lead to 12-1 through the third period before cruising to its third win of the year.
- Sophomore Francesca Co' paced the team with five goalsand added two steals and an assist, while Madelyn Koerper and Shanna Zuanich had three goals apiece.
- Freshmen Whitney Wood and Grace Smith scored goals, as did Hannah Woren and Tatum Lomax.
- Worren was the top distributor for La Salle, dishing out six assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Saint Francis U.):
- The Red Flash jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after the first quarter of play, before La Salle halved its deficit in the second on a goal from Co'.
- The score remained 2-1 in favor of SFU until the third, when Woren and Zuanich tickled the twine to give the Explorers a 3-2 lead.
- Saint Francis knotted the back-and-forth game with 1:45 to go in the third, before another score with 4:39 to go in regulation put the Red Flash back on top.
- With time running down, Co' came through with the game-tying tally at the 2:02 mark.Â
- The contest appeared to be heading towards overtime when a penalty was called on the Red Flash with 1:14 left.
- Co' took the attempt from the five-meter mark and converted, and the score held the rest of the way to give the Explorers their second win over SFU in as many weekends.
