PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's water team kicked off its set of home matches with a dominate 17-6 over VMI before falling in a hard-fought close battle to No. 17 Wagner, 15-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED (VMI):
- Back-to-back Madelyn Koerper goals started things off for the Explorers followed by another four unanswered goals to put La Salle in the 6-0 lead over the Keydets. A penalty on Casey Malone gave VMI the chance it needed to get on the board, 6-1. With just 30 seconds left Francesca Co' shot a rocket into the back of the net to maintain the Explorers' six-goal lead, 7-1, heading into the second period.
- La Salle held the Keydets scoreless in the second frame with Co' firing off two consecutive goals to put the Explorers ahead 9-1. The scoring slowed a bit until the final 20 seconds when Koerper found herself right in front of the net to extend the Explorers lead, 10-1, at the end of the first half.
- La Salle went on a 4-0 run through almost the entirety of the third period to pull ahead 14-1. With 30 seconds remaining the VMI offense saw a breakthrough to make it 14-2 heading into the final eight minutes of the game.
- The teams traded goals in the first few minutes with La Salle going on a two-goal run to pull ahead 17-3. The Keydets rounded out the game on a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 11, 17-6.
- Shanna Zuanich led the scoring for La Salle with four goals. Koerper and Co' joined her in the multi-goal category with three apiece alongside Claire Durham with two.
- Sofia Curtis, Hannah Woren, Paige Mitchell and Malone all added a single goal for the Explorers.
- Woren led the team in assists with three.
- Curtis, Co' and Zuanich all recorded a team-high three steals each. Curtis added one block alongside Sophie Appler.
- La Salle went 3-1 in sprints.
- Emma Gurasich recorded five saves and two steals in the net while Caitlin Valentine totaled six saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED (WAGNER):
- After nearly six scoreless minutes Wagner became the first to strike immediately answered by Koerper to make it a 1-1 game. With just under a minute to go the Seahawks converted again to take a 2-1 lead into the second period.
- Wagner offense came out strong with a 3-0 run to pull ahead 5-1. Zuanich answered the attack with a man-up goal with 3:30 to go to bring the deficit back down to three, 5-2. Wagner answered back with a 2-0 run to pull ahead by five, 7-2, to end the frame.
- The teams traded goals through the third period putting up four each for the Seahawks to maintain their five-goal lead, 11-6, heading into the final eight minutes of play.
- A displaced Seahawks goalie put Koerper in prime scoring position for an open-net goal to cut the deficit down to four, 11-7. Wagner responded with back-to-back goals to increase its lead back to five. The Explorers offense picked up with the trio of Malone, Co' and Zuanich converting for La Salle to bring the deficit back down to three for the first time since the second period. The teams traded goals through the final minutes to keep it a three-goal game, 15-12.
- Co' and Koerper led the offense with four goals apiece.
- Zuanich added three goals for the Explorers and Malone one.
- Co' also led the team in assists (2), steals (3) and blocks (2).
- Gurasich recorded 12 saves in the net.

- La Salle returns for one final home game of the season tomorrow, Mar. 26 at 1 p.m. against Villanova. The Explorers will honor their six seniors in a pregame ceremony set to start at 12:40 p.m.
