PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The La Salle women's water polo team maintained a narrow lead through the majority of the game, but Villanova got the final say to take a single-point victory over the Explorers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Villanova first to strike just 20 seconds in 1-0, Koerper with an immediate response 1-1. After a nearly six scoreless minutes with just under 1:30 left to play Francesca Co' put the Explorers in the lead followed swiftly with a Tatum Lomax rocket to make it a two-goal game, 3-1. With just 0.1 seconds left in the first period Villanova snuck it past goalie Emma Gurasich to make it a single-point game, 3-2.
- The second period remained scoreless through the sixth minute with the Wildcats converting the lone goal of the game to tie it, 3-3.
- The Explorers quickly went to work to start the second half with two goals in the first two minute to pull ahead 5-3. Villanova responded with a 2-0 run to tie it up, 5-5, with 4:30 left to play. Teams traded goals to tie it up again at 6-6 with La Salle getting the final say thanks to a Co' goal to give La Salle the 7-6 edge heading into the final eight minutes of the game.
- Villanova tied the game twice more with the teams being knotted at 8-8 until the final two minutes when a man-up advantage for the Wildcats set them up for the goal to give them the lead for the first time since the first period and the ultimate 9-8 win.
